The palmOne Zire 72 is fully featured handheld that I use more frequently than my PC. I strongly recommend it. [. . . ]

Why do I love Palm OS? Maybe because I’m used to it, I actually have not tried pocket PC but it seems that Palm has more software and the Zire 72 has the most features at the most reasonable price I could find on the market so I bought it. Keep in mind that I have used palm OS for years, I had a palm III, palm Vx, and now my Zire 72. Before now, the palm pilots I have had have served me well with few problems (the power button on the five wasn’t totally behaved). I was so excited to get the new Zire 72 and be able to take pictures of my contacts so that I could better match names to faces, plus people love to have their picture taken especially if you give them a good excuse, usually. So I bought my palm on this site for their “special price”, (I’m not going to plug amazon here but I had looked other places). Like those of you who have done research, I realize that Palm dominates the software titles arena. Those of you who don’t know a handheld device is not just a task and calendar manager but can be used as a personal productivity tool as well. Here is the problem, when I first used palm, I was in college, and it was perfect. Now, my time is more valuables and the Zire’s superior features and cheaper cost actually gets called into question now that I’m more thoughtful with my time. Allow me to share. . . Palm $ or more including shipping (as of release date), plus 512mb Ultra 2 secure digital card $ approximately, Palm guide $, now you need to get palms 2 year warranty also $50 from web site unless you don’t want it after a year (we’ll do the math in a sec). If your in high school or college and you have a computer with outlook, fine, look no more and buy the Zire 72. But if you depend on your Handheld and you make decent money, you may find the need to buy two Zire 72’s or get a Pocket PC, I’ll explain why. I’ve had my Zire 72 for less than a month and I have had to send it back twice. The first for aesthetic reasons, the blue exterior was pealing off so easily that it needed to be fixed within the first week. I call palm and get customer service in India, the guy, was so nice and trying so hard but could hardly speak English at their Indian outpost and I tried but I had the hardest time understanding, luckily I knew someone who spoke the language with me and he took care of it. Anyway, Palm refused to charge me for a new palm pilot and ship one out so that I could then return mine, the forced me to send mine first and then once they received it, plus a day, they would send me a new one. This call took 25 minutes and a few days later I got a box in which I returned my palm. I received it exactly 4 days later as promised, although they were unable to provide me a tracking # at any point while it was gone to confirm when it would arrive so I could make sure to be home. I got a NEW palm back in original packaging, which I considered selling on ebay in a moment of frustration but hey, this was the new improved non-flake version. ONE WEEK LATER. One the way to New York, I go through security, get on the plane, tried to turn it on and it was DEAD. I thought x-ray might have had an effect but I doubt it seeing as how the years I have had a palm previously it had been fine. Now, I need to spend another week with my palm gone! But this time, it’s dead! So that’s 6 days for a total of 10 days including the previous 4 plus another half hour of my time, for a total of an hour. TIME IS VALUABLE and this palm may be worth buying two of if your a professional or just getting something that functions in the first place like a Dell Axiom or an ipac. It seems that palm no longer cares about the valuable time of it’s customer base, they seem to be content having paying customers beta testing their hardware, struggling with customer service and having the customer WAIT while THEY fix THEIR mistakes. In the future, it seems to me that Palm will never survive, Pocket PC is gaining ground in the handheld market and unless an excellent hardware/software company like apple purchases Palm, and if they keep heading down this path, Pocket PC should be destined to dominate. While in the future, PocketPC is a great choice, but until then I still love my palm, err palms.

The palmOne Zire72 doesn’t look too bad. . . the con that really irritates me, is that 98% of consumers said that the paint chips off. If I get this, I’m considering(after the paint flakes off) on re-painting it with nail-polish. Perhaps I can find a similar-colored nail-polish of the original painted face, and create a "refurbished" Zire72! It certainly wouldn’t hurt to try. . . anyways. . . I’m assuming, since it was not listed otherwise, that the Zire72 does not play movies. Bummer. I hope it does, even if it does eat up the battery life. . . I also hope that people are exaggerating about the camera. . . . . oh, well, I’ll just have to see it for myself!
