I ordered this tuner to have a means of watching TV on my laptop computer when on-the-go and during power outages. Unfortunately, there was no mention of minimum system requirements on ANY website with information about this product.
When the item arrived, I noticed the system requirements on the side of the box (after I had opened it). Among others, it requires a minimum processor speed of 2. 2 GHz. Mine is not quite that fast, but I decided to give it a try anyway.
It tuned just fine and found all the stations in my area I expected it to find and then some. I found the software interface pretty easy to use, but I only got to use it for a short time. Tuning in the scanned stations proved to be a problem, presumably because of my slower processor. Sound was skippy and the picture was unviewable because of black bars across the screen.
Since I felt as if I had been misled by the item description, I sent it back for a refund.

The Win TV HVR-850 has some good features, but needs a lot of improvement. I bought this on Friday and have playing with it over the weekend.
Pros:
Can receive HDTV channels via antenna.
The TV tuner works like a mini DVR.
Cons:
The Win TV software included gives a lot of problems, especially the Win Tv Scheduler.
Installation of the Win TV can be tricky and confusing.
The antenna that was supplied is horrible.
I’m giving this product 3 stars because I have been having some problems with it. The first time I hooked it via my digital Time Warner TV, I was getting about 27 analog cable channels; the second time I plugged it in I was receiving 29 channels. About two of the channels I was receiving were kind of fuzzy and a bit noisy/static. I started to try out recording with the analog cable TV (channel 2 WCBS) it was pretty good I give it and 8. Then I tried to setup with the antenna, at first I didn’t receive any channels over the air. I wanted to record a show and it wasn’t working at all. I uninstalled the WIN TV & software, then reinstalled it and like magic I was able to record tv shows. Then I went & placed back the antenna, then I got 5 analog pictures that were horrible the pictures were jumping up and down, no sound, and were in B&W. I was also receiving 4 digital channels in HDTV & was able to hear the sound no problem with those channels. I plugged the antenna out& placed it back in, I wanted to experiment with an analog converter, I wanted to see if I can get any digital channels, I only got about 3 analog channels(those were fuzzy & a lot of static) and no digital channels. I then put back the antenna it to the USB, the I was received 4 analog channels & was receiving 8 digital channels WOW, but it was slow for channels to load. So I’m going to try out Beyond TV to see if I can pick up some more channels.

The unit I received was sent back for a refund. Need I say more? Probably not, but here’s a little. . . It didn’t receive the public air signals as it should have, and the cable signal reminded me of the “snow” that used to plague the medium back in the days of black and white TV and aerial antenae. I’ve had other tuners from Hauppauge that have worked wonderfully. In fact, this was purchased to replace one that was shorted out by a lightning storm. Thankfully I had another card in another computer that I was able to use instead. . .

I had purchased this product thinking i was going to be able to use it inside of Windows Media Center and boy was I wrong! I’ve had nothing but problems using this USB device from Hauppauge. I was trying to setup this device to use as a DVR but it kept giving errors and the signal would cut off every 5 min into viewing the channel or recording. I have used this device on different computers, different versions of Windows and nothing worked!
What a waste of money.
